CHAPTER TEN

COLE DRANK HER IN, her scent, her taste, the feel of her body against his. He wanted more. He wanted all of her.

She touched his tongue with hers, and he moaned as much in pain as in pleasure. If she knew what she was doing to him, she’d run as far and as fast as she could go. The urge to punish her for another’s sins was almost as strong as his desire to take her. He had to hold on to the part of him that was sane, that told him she wasn’t Carrie.

Her hand moved to the back of his neck, and her cool fingers made him tremble. He pressed himself against her, letting her feel his erection, showing her exactly what her touch was leading to.

Instead of pushing him away, she moved her hips.

He tore his lips from hers. “Get out of here, Lily. Get out before it’s too late.”

Her answer was to pull his head down and quiet him with another kiss.

There was no more strength to fight her. He moved with her until the door was at her back, and then he pressed his hips against her, put his hand on her breast. The feel of that softness beneath him made him hungrier still. Her nipple against his palm was as hard and stiff as he was, even through her shirt and bra.

Leaving her lips, he dipped his head to her neck, to the hollow beneath her ear. He kissed her, nipped her, all the while showing her what he wanted with his body and his fingers.

“Cole.” Her breath came out in a sultry whisper. “Cole, wait.”

It was only then that he felt her hand against his chest. He lifted his head.

“We can’t do this. It’s not what either of us wants.”

“Speak for yourself,” he said, his voice a growl he barely recognized.

She moved to the side, away from him, and he lowered his gaze to her chest. To the stark evidence that he wasn’t the only one wanting.

She blushed, which was something to behold. It caused her face to glow with an innocence that made him ache for her even more.

“Someone has to be sensible here,” she said. “Sleeping together isn’t going to help.”

“You’re wrong.”

“No I’m not. It’s a way to escape. To avoid the real issues.”

“There are no issues.”

“Right.” The word hung in the air, flat, filled with disappointment. She turned and opened the door. “I’ll get packed and be out of here within the hour.”

He stopped her with his hand on her arm. “You don’t have to go tonight.”

“No?” She met his gaze. “What are you saying?”

He should tell her she could stay until morning. Get a good night’s sleep before her long drive. That would solve his problem. He could go back to his comfortable life. He’d continue his search for a more suitable woman. For someone who wouldn’t make him need or feel or care.
